In this article, I am going to share with you 30 side-hustle ideas that can make you money. These are all 100% legitimate ways of creating an extra income and the majority can be done from anywhere in the world, all you need is a laptop and a decent internet connection.
30 Side-Hustle Ideas for an Extra Income in 2020
1. Start a Blog
Many think the days of earning money through blogging are long gone. With roughly 152 million blogs on the internet, I can see why one might think that.
However, I’m here to tell you that blogging is well and truly alive, it’s just certain practices that are dead.
Blogging can still be a fantastic side-hustle providing you adapt with the ever-changing digital age.
In fact, there are tons of success stories online about people who have made fortunes from blogging, and they all started out the same, by starting a side-hustle.
Starting a blog is also much easier and quicker than you might think. If you want to see just how simple it is, visit my page: ‘Start a New Blog’.
If you are ready to get stuck in and create your first blog now, I’ve written this step-by-step guide.
Good Luck!
2. Online Surveys
Now, of course, filling out online surveys aren’t going to make you much of an income, but they require such little effort that they can be a great way to earn a few extra ££s without the elbow grease that’s required for other side-hustle ideas.
- Inbox Pounds – UK sister company of the very popular survey company Inbox Dollars. Earn £1 just from signing up.
- Swagbucks – One of the most well-known survey companies. Earn a £3 sign up bonus.
- Prize Rebel – Has over 10 million members and has paid out over 20 million in cash and rewards since 2007.
- Survey Junkie – Popular survey site with over 3 million members.
3. Appen
Appen is a data collection company with the aim to improve the user experience within online industries such as eCommerce, social media, voice recognition and many more.
If you go to their careers page you’ll find a list of jobs such as social media evaluator or search engine analyst. They do have many more tasks you can get your teeth into, but these two are the most popular jobs.
The pay is varied from task to task, but on average you should expect to get paid around £10 per hour.
4. Affiliate Marketing
If you’ve never heard of affiliate marketing, it’s simply the process of referring people to products or services. If someone you’ve referred makes a purchase, you’ll earn a small commission.
Affiliate marketing can be a great side-hustle alongside your normal day job. It’s actually my primary method of earning an income through this blog.
If you are willing to put in some serious hard work, it’s possible to earn a full-time income from affiliate marketing. There are also stories of people earning 6 figure salaries, such as Darren Rowse of problogger.com
5. Sell on eBay / Amazon
You can easily make an extra few ££s by selling unwanted items on eBay or Amazon. This isn’t a side-hustle idea that’s going to allow you to retire next year, but it will certainly help you save some money for that rainy day fund.
With Amazon, you can actually earn a very good living, through the process of drop shipping or FBA (Fulfilment by Amazon).
I haven’t had much experience with it personally but there are many who earn six-figure salaries.
6. Recycle your used phone
There’s a cool company called Gazelle that allows you to recycle used smartphones. You probably won’t get loads for your old phone, but every penny counts right?
I believe Gazelle was founded in the USA, so, unfortunately, this does make it harder to recycle your used phones in the UK.
However, if you type in your post-code on this page, you’ll see how far you’d have to travel to use their services.
7. Drive for Uber
If you own your own car and haven’t got any plans in the evenings or weekends, why not make some extra money driving for Uber?
Of course Uber isn’t quite as popular in the UK as it is in the US, but a few hours an evening and at weekends could easily earn you an extra couple of hundred pounds.
8. Rent your spare room on Airbnb
If you have a spare room you can rent out, I recommend using Airbnb. You’ll be paid quicker and can charge a lot more compared with renting your room out to a normal tenant.
With Airbnb, you could easily charge £80 or more for just a night (depending on the quality of your property). You could also rent out your entire property for even more money if you happen to be going away somewhere.
9. Sell your services on Freelance platforms
If you have a specific skill or service to offer, you can advertise them on freelance platforms. There are a few decent options out there, but my favourite is Fiverr.
Although competition is fierce, you can still make some decent money if you put the effort in.
10. Create an online course
This follows on nicely from the previous side hustle idea about using Fiverr to sell your services.
If you are truly confident about your skills then you should definitely create an online course. You can use platforms such as Udemy and Teachable to create and advertise your course.
If you really focus on delivering as much value as possible, you can definitely make a substantial amount of money – maybe even enough to replace your 9-5.
11. Create an eBook
You can use KDP to create an eBook and sell it on Amazon. If you create a quality eBook, you can get it published in less than 5 minutes and have it advertised in Kindle stores worldwide within 24-48 hours.
12. Create an audiobook
Why not go one step further and turn your eBook into an audiobook?
If your eBook is already advertised on Amazon, you can use ACX to search for the title and then turn it into an audio version. The number of people these days who listen to audiobooks makes this a potentially very lucrative side hustle.
13. Online tutor
Using your skills you could advertise yourself as an online tutor and conduct lessons via skype. Depending on what your skills are you this could probably create you a decent amount of income.
Another thing I love about this side hustle idea is that you could upsell your services or products. If you have created a course, an eBook or audiobook as suggested in the points above, you can sell these to your students providing they are actually useful.
14. Create a Youtube channel
This side hustle idea isn’t as foolproof as the others, as creating an income via Youtube is very challenging, since it takes a lot of time and the majority of people will give up.
However, if you stick at it and focus on creating consistent, helpful content, then there’s no reason why you can’t create a second income.
Using the ideas mentioned above, you could use Youtube to upsell your courses, eBooks and audiobooks to your subscribers.
15. Sign up with Respondent
Respondent is a platform that advertises research projects for companies. As these businesses want feedback, you can take part in projects and get paid for the feedback you provide.
Some of the projects can actually be very well paid, with the average compensation $140 for just an hours work, or just over £100.
Some of the project requirements can be a bit specific, but if you fit the criteria, you could definitely earn a decent side income.
16. Teach English Online
Teaching English to foreign students can be a great way to earn extra income or even replace your current one. You don’t need to be an expert, but you will need a basic qualification such as TEFL.
- VIPKID – The most popular platform for teaching English online, earn on average $22/hr. (UK residents not eligible).
- Landi – Earn $12 – $21/hr teaching Chinese children English online. UK friendly.
- PalFish – Earn on average $10 – $18/hr all via the PalFish app.
17. Use TaskRabbit
TaskRabbit is an app that connects you with people in your local neighbourhood that need odd jobs doing. Examples of popular jobs include handyman, cleaning, heavy lifting and flat-pack assembly.
Now as this app isn’t that well known you might find it difficult to find jobs if you live in a less populated area.
However, If you live in London or other larger cities you shouldn’t have any issues finding regular work.
18. Become a Freelance Writer
If you enjoy writing and have some proof of your work, then you could create another income by writing. You only have to do a quick google search to see how many opportunities there are for freelance writers.
I also recommend using Linkedin to search for freelance writing jobs.
Like any job, the more experience you have, the more likely you are to earn a higher income. I believe if you create really great content, you could easily earn £100+ a week whilst still working your usual job.
19. Matched Betting
Matched betting is NOT gambling.
It’s a method of turning free bets offered by online bookmakers into real cash. We can do this by covering all of the potential outcomes of a sporting event by placing multiple bets.
By doing this, you can make a profit each time because it no longer matters which team won the sporting event.
This form of betting has become incredibly popular in the UK and in my opinion, one of the most fool-proof side hustle ideas on the list.
- Profit Accumulator – The largest matched betting platform where you can earn £45 by following the steps in the free trial.
- Odds Monkey – Another great option to get started with matched betting.
Profit Accumulator and Odds Monkey are two UK powerhouses when it comes to matched betting platforms.
According to Odds Monkey, matched betting is sustainable and profitable for the long-term. Once you’ve opened all of your bookie accounts, you can make around £500–£700 a month by taking advantage of offers for existing customers. That’ll take around 40 minutes per day.
Members in their forum regularly report making £900+ per month, so it is possible to make a living from matched betting.
Remember: you don’t need to pay any tax on matched betting earnings. That means you can make the equivalent of a £20,000+ salary by spending just a few hours a day!
20. Rent out your Parking Space
Got a spare parking space? Why not rent it out for a weekly or monthly fee.
Finding a parking space can be a nightmare sometimes, especially for people that work in a busy town or city.
Parking is usually also very expensive, especially in places like London.
If you are lucky enough to have a spare parking space I believe you could easily earn £100 / month or more.
21. Host Foreign Students
If you don’t want to go down the Airbnb route, you could offer your spare room to a foreign student. A lot of language schools in the UK especially will pay over £100 / week per student.
This can be a very easy way to make an extra income and you’ll have the added benefit of mixing with different cultures.
22. Airbnb Experience
Did you know that Airbnb has a cool feature that allows you to become somewhat of a tour guide in your local area?
You simply create an ‘experience’ on their app and away you go.
23. Sell your Recipes
Fancy yourself as a bit of a chef?
Websites such as Cuisine at Home will actually pay up to $50 if they publish your recipe or cooking tip on their site.
24. Become a Dog Walker
Rover is a cool app that pays you for dog walking, pet sitting and a whole lot more.
So if you’re a dog lover and want to earn some extra money, this might be the perfect side hustle idea.
25. Deliver Groceries
If you have a car and a bit of spare time you could deliver groceries with Instacart.
This could be a great way to earn some extra money and do a good deed for others, such as elderly or disabled people who aren’t able to get their own groceries.
Not available in the UK.
26. Refurbish and re-sell old furniture
This can be a really fun way of making some extra cash.
Wooden furniture, in particular, is very easy to refurbish and you can often find unwanted items in your local area on places such as gumtree or Facebook marketplace.
If you live in the US, Craigslist or thrift stores are great options.
With a bit of TLC and some patience, you could easily turn this into a nice little side hustle, or even a lucrative business like this women did.
27. Monetize your Instagram account
If you have a large following on Instagram you should definitely think about monetizing it.
This essentially means you can get paid from companies to advertise their products in your Instagram posts.
I would say you’ll want to be at around 10k followers before you even think about earning money from Instagram. Another thing to think about is the engagement you’re getting from followers.
If you have 10k followers but you get less than 100 people engaging with your posts, you won’t be a very attractive prospect to advertisers.
To put things into perspective, for every advertisement Kylie Jenner shares with her 141 million followers, she reportedly makes around £800,000.
28. Buy and sell domain names
Buying and selling domain names isn’t as fool-proof as the other side hustle ideas I’ve mentioned, but it can be a very good earner if you do your research.
GoDaddy has a helpful guide on this.
29. Rent out your items on Fat Llama
Have you got any tools or equipment that are just lying there gathering dust? With Fat Llama you can make money by renting out your items.
Camera’s, drills, bicycles, drones and pretty much any useful item you can think of can be rented out to people within your local area.
This can be a very easy way of making money and apparently some people are making a full-time income from it.
I believe this is one of most fool-proof side hustle ideas on the list.
30. Sell your pic’s online
If you own a phone with a decent camera, which I’m sure the majority of people reading this will have, you can earn money by selling your pictures on platforms such as Shutterstock or Smugmug.
Better yet, if you have a professional camera and you’re a skilled photographer, then you can definitely make a good income doing this.
Conclusion
All of the side hustle ideas I’ve listed within this article can be done alongside your main job. The majority of them can also be turned into a full-time income.
Although there is definitely money to be made in this list, results aren’t guaranteed. How much you earn will depend on how hard you work and how much time you invest.
Now get hustling!
